Description: This course provides a comprehensive overview of substance abuse among older adults. Discussed in the course is the use and abuse of alcohol, psychoactive prescription drugs, and over-the-counter medications, as well as the resulting physiological effects that are unique to this population. Risk factors for abuse are identified. Examples of non-threatening screening questions are provided as well as screening assessments that are appropriate for older clients. This course provides beneficial information for the novice clinician as well as the seasoned professional. Information provided in the course is applicable to all treatment settings. Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to: 1. Identify hidden problems of abuse that exist in the older adult population. 2. Identify drinking patterns among older adults. 3. Identify affects of alcohol use in older adults. 4. Identify use and abuse of psychoactive prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications among older adults. 5. Assess alcohol and prescription drug abuse among older adults. 6. Identify effective interventions and treatment approaches for older adults with substance abuse issues.
